Route Climbed: ski route from Gelmer hut Date Climbed: May 2nd 2004  Sucess!

We climbed Diechterhorn on our route from Gelmer hut to Trift hut that was the goal of our ski tour. In summer Gelmer hut might be crowded but not in early May: we did not meet anybody on the route from Raeterichsboden parking at Grimsel pass road to the hut where we were also alone. The route to the hut is a bit tricky at that time: we did not dare to walk on the ice of the Gelmer lake but carriied ski along the summer route above the lake that crosses some steep couloirs filled with snow.

The next day we climbed Diechterlimi pass over the glacier, quite steep but no problem with ski crampons. Orientation was a problem as we were in thick fog so we had to work with a compass to find the mountain pass. From there we followed the slopes right of the ridge that could be gained with ski shortly before the summit. The last meters were steep but also not difficult. An ice axe was useful. The downhill to the first plain of the Trift glacier was also in deep fog so we used the rope there although this limits the fun of skiing very much! Having reached Trift hut weather became sunny and we had a nice view back to the mountain. Two days later on our way back conditions were similar. Great downhill on firn snow from Diechterlimi to Gelmer hut!
