Short Getaway Up The Scenic Route
There were a lot of people (+22) and a half dozen dogs. Everyone was nice, including the dogs. There wasn't much snow until the top 100 feet or so, but there was crusted ice beneath the vegetation the whole way. The view is great.

Route Climbed: More Difficult up, less difficult down
Stared at 7:30AM expecting snow (but there was none). Reached the summit at 9:30AM. We took our time on the trip down, back to the TH at 12:40PM. Great hike. The weather was good except for all the clouds
Route Climbed: Trail Date Climbed: July 2004 mid-day
This was a fun little hike, with great views of the Gorge. Hike up, lunch, and hike down seemed like a good idea. I recommend doing this hike early in the morning, what a trip that could be!
(Note to self: do not hike in the afternoon on the hottest day of the year!)
Route Climbed: South Route (Easy Option) Date Climbed: 5/7/2005
Early in the spring the entire moutain blooms with wild flowers for some of the best photo opportunities. An excellent training hike for the early season.
I have climbed this many times over the last 4 years, but the most recent was June 13th. There was a sign at the trailhead that warned of aggressive cougar activity and said "hike at your own risk". However I always hike with my 2 large dogs so I rarely see any wildlife. The wildflowers are just past their peak, but still impressive. I never get tired of this hike. It is steep enough to get my heart pumping, and the view from the top is always worthwhile.
Second time on Dog Mountain. Both times I have seen a bear (the first, a little one on Augspurger last June and this time a big one on the Augspurger trail on Dog Mountain itself). What is the probability of that?
Decent views over the Gorge and of semi-obscured Adams and St Helens this time.
This was my 5th Dog Mountain summit hike. Great training mountain with a bit of weight in my pack. 1:12 up for a total round trip time of 2:10. Could have gone a bit faster on the descent if it were not so darn rainy!!
Route Climbed: south side trail Date Climbed: June 25th, 1999
I'd climbed this as early as the late 70's but failed to log it. Done it about 12 times over the years and it's always a great little hike. Saw a couple of baby rattlesnakes on the trail on the west side last year.
Route Climbed: all the established trails Date Climbed: 4X
This is a great hike! Have done it four times (always with our dog) in winter and early spring. Will make it out there sometime in late spring to check out the wild flower displays.
Route Climbed: Scenic Up/ old trail down Date Climbed: June 17, 2004
I was on the trail by 5:30 am to beat the heat and huffed on up a nice and quiet trail. The wildflowers looked like they were sufferin' from our coming summer sun; about a quarter were burned out, but the three-fourths remaining were great! There were clear skies like crazy; Hood, Adams, and St. Helens all showed up.
When I was eating breakfast up top, two deer crossed the meadow not more then 25 feet away from me. On my decent, I walked right up on a rattle snake eating his own chipmunk breakfast. I do believe that there is nothing like the sound of that rattle!

December, 2002 - Hiked in the wind and rain and had no view. could barely see Wind Mountain.
April, 2004 - Hiked on a windy and suny day and had great views of the whitecaps on the columbia, Mt defiance, the top of Hood, Mt St Helens, and down the gorge. Also a lot of wildflowers in bloom. took about an hour and half to the top. very windy and pretty crowded. I would hate to see it on a weekend.
May, 2004 - I did this to wrap up a 4 summit day. It was preceded by Lookout Mountain, Bald Butte, and Mount Defiance. I saw quite a few people headed down as i was going up. Pretty cloudy, but i still had decent views of Hood, Defiance, and the Gorge. It was an appropriate finale to my day since it got dark on the way down and then it started to lightning. I saw a lot of flashes for the final mile or so, but didn't start hearing thunder until i was back to my truck and safe.
December 2006 - hiked up to a snow covered mostly viewless summit.
March 29, 2007 - Great hike with Jen and Dosha on a perfect day. Could see St Helens, Adams, and part of Hood along with the other gorge peaks. Even found the geocache at the top just for fun! had burgers and beer in Hood River before heading back to OC.
Route Climbed: Augsburger Mtn Trail, Dog Mtn Trail Date Climbed: April 25, 2004
This is always a great hike - and I was surprised by how many wildflowers were already in bloom. I had intended on doing the Augsberger Mtn hike, but after realizing that I didn't have enough time for the 15-mile loop I cut over to Dog Mountain instead. Great views and unusually warm weather - definitely didn't feel like April!!
Route Climbed: Scenic Up/Old Trail Down Date Climbed: April 11, 2004
This was my first time doing this hike--I can see why it is so popular. The views were incredible. (See Brian Jenkins' log). I definitely plan to do this hike many more times.--Natasha
