Straightforward trail, suitable for children, took about an hour each way on a cloudy day (not too hot). Views at least as good as from Pao de Acucar or Corcovado.
The favela was just a neighborhood like most others, not scary to anyone who's been in a big city before, but don't bring your own car. Hire a van at the bottom of the favela and let the driver deal with the reckless traffic on the extremely narrow and steep road.
