Downclimbing the South Ridge on Thunder

Downclimbing the South Ridge on Thunder

Taken from about 1/4 down the South Ridge coming off Thunder Pyramid. We were on our way traversing over to Point 13,722 "Lightning Pyramid". This ridge was serious class-4 with frequent class-5 moves. These peaks are still standing only under sheer will!

Nothing like poor rock to make you focus!

At least that's what it does to me. And I guess to others as well, or Darwin takes over.

I'm curious about one thing though: why keep that axe at the ready and not tucked away? This section looks like it would be better to have both hands fully available...

but knowing the rock quality in the Elks, this photo just makes me want to puke. ;-)
