Dryfall #3

Dryfall #3

goofball getting a boost from a rock pile, climbing the third dryfall in the canyon approach to Fire Peak (a.k.a. Longwell Peak). This dryfall is about 40 feet high and a little more difficult than the previous two. But the difficult part has no serious consequences because it is at the bottom, in that smooth rock with off-balance, awkward hand holds. So this dryfall can also be upclimbed unprotected, although the height of this one would make for a serious fall from the top. (And even though I was comfortable enough on this one to climb it unprotected, I, being the safety boy I am, chose to wear a helmet when climbing it.) 31 August 2008. About 150 feet after this dryfall, the route continues upcanyon, forking to the left. About 300 feet after this fork, on the left side, is the drainage that is upclimbed to exit the canyon to bypass dryfall #3 on the descent. Continuing upcanyon, only one more dryfall is encountered -- a large, maybe 50-foot dryfall. It did not look like it would be a safe upclimb, so we chose to bypass it. It can be bypassed on either side of the canyon, but the shorter way would be upcanyon right, as the canyon bends to the right upcanyon from this dryfall anyway.
