Dwarf Oak Forest on Rich Mountain

Dwarf Oak Forest on Rich Mountain

Along the ridgeline that forms Rich Mountain, OK/AR you'll find this dwarf oak forest (it's actually a couple miles on the OK side of the border). These trees grow to 115-feet in the valley below. Here, at the crest of the ridge, the constant winds ensure that these specimens rarely top 10-20 feet. However, the root systems are as large as their cousins below, indicating some are over 200 years old. Imaged in November 2007.
