Fun scramble after West Dyer
Skinned up and skied down the southeast face solo. Road was melted for a mile or so then mostly continuous snow to the summit. Took an extra short lap off the NE side as well while waiting for the SE slopes to soften. 3rd summit of this one overall.
Iowa Gulch, Dyer, Gemini, car, beer. When I come back I will try the WR.
10/2/05 - From Iowa Gulch. Traversed to Gemini and Sherman afterwards.
1/29/17 - From Iowa Gulch winter closure. Traversed to Gemini and Sherman afterwards.
A slightly contrived but fun way to do an otherwise unmemorable peak. It's way more interesting and pleasant than the standard power line route. Mini trip report.
Kessler (my 12 year old son), I, and six other climbers (including on 13 year old) met in the morning to climb Dyer Mountain from the Leadville side. Kessler and I had to stay up late the night before, so we left at 3:45 AM, but were delayed on the road, so didn't reach the trailhead until 7 AM.
There were four skiers and four snowshoers. We all made steady progress up Iowa Gulch and into the Iowa Amphitheater. Once the sun hit the slopes of the mountain, it was intense! We applied sunscreen several times throughout the day, but Kessler and I still got too much sun.
We climbed the southwest sloped up to the summit ridge, which was followed to the summit. The day was sunny and bright and the views were nice.
Four people brought skis and the other four glissaded down.
It was a great climb, but the road at the end of the descent seem to drag on forever, at least on snowshoes.
From Iowa Gulch to Dyer, Evans B, Gemini, & Sherman on the return.
Sacramento Creek Trailhead. Did Pennsylvania Mountain first then continued on to Evans-B. Climbed the class 3 (if you stay on ridge crest) connecting ridge to Dyer Mountain. Was also going to pick up Gemini and Sherman, but a storm blew in.
With Gemini, Sherman and Sheridan
Very cool weather... low whispy clouds along the ridge... fun!
w/ great friends...
Beautiful day with fantastic views. I enjoyed the historic "mining junk" almost as much as the mountains! Good call with the Royal Crown hot Chai ;-) .
From Iowa gulch easy hike to the summit with good friends.
I hiked 7 13ers and one fourteener. A great all day trip. Started at Leavick mining site. Hihed Horseshoe Mountain, Finnback Knob, Horseshoe Mountain again, Peerless Mountain, Mt. Sheridan, Mt. Sherman, Gemini Peak, Dyer Mountain and White Ridge. Great day.
made a loop with Gemini and Sherman. Nothing too exciting but a good way to acclimate or something to do if you are short on time. If I lived in Colorado, I would save this for a winter ascent
From Iowa Gulch, combo of Dyer, Gemini and Sherman. Pleasant enough day to take a quick snooze on the summit of Dyer.
but before the T-storm
Up from Iowa gulch past the old mining cabin and to the summit
Did this circuit with Sherman and Gemini as well. Was a decent day in September. Coming from Dyer doing the class 3 W Ridge made this enjoyable.
We took the upper Iowa gulch route down to make it a somewhat of a loop.
