You can look at it this way: there are so many people on SP now compared to back when this was submitted, that new photos of any ilk instantly receive more votes and hits in the first couple days than many early submissions have gotten over their lifetimes. Most of my stuff was submitted years ago now. I am certainly not the only one in this position, either.
There's a lot of "sleeper" material on SP.
If much of the early stuff on SP was to be resubmitted right now, the hits, votes, and comments would be flying.
