Earthquake!

I happened to be on my way to Bishop Creek when I saw these strange dust clouds that made me pull off the road. According to the radio, it turned out to be an earthquake that had occurred just 20 minutes or so earlier. Years later, I learned that this was a 5.8M temblor whose epicenter was on the eastern slope of the northern Wheeler Crest (just out of view to the right of the image). Some geologists believe that this particular quake was the first of many that eventually culminated in the Mammoth Lakes quake of May, 1980. -October 4, 1978
