Ellingwood is only about an hour from the summit of Blanca, so you might as well bag it. It's easier and more solid than it looks. Camping at Lake Como is what CO is all about.
tagged this as an afterthought on the best classic 14er traverse in CO. at least it looks like a peak, unlike a lot of other bumps on ridges Tr here
After Gash Ridge and Blanca, I tried continuing down Ellingwood's North Ridge, but about 13,450 feet ran into 5th class choss down-climbing. Decided to return over Ellingwood's summit and made the long walk down Lake Como Road.
Set out with hopes of doing the grand slam but had to skip Little Bear because of bad conditions in the hourglass. Good ridge climbing on the point though!
great peak this way
This ridge surprised me and turned out to be more fun and exciting than I thought it would be. Lots of excellent class 3 scrambling. The rock was solid and I enjoyed my solitude away from the crowded standard route. Try this ridge if you like long sustained scrambling!
Great day. Loved cruising down the ridge proper from Blanca and taking in the great scrambling. Descended the West Ridge.
Backpacked up the road to Lake Como and the day was still very clear and calm, so I headed up to tag Blanca and Ellingwood. Made it back to camp as the sun was going down.
gorgeous bluebird day! gotta love the trips that roll out on the drop of a dime.. bit of a late start.. 12 hr day.. only saw 2 other peeps all day.. also had to be one of THE most spectacular sunsets i have ever witnessed.. incredible
By the time we got to Ellingwood from Blanca, the fog had lifted and we could actually see where we were.
Hiked up the SW ridge. Fun little scramble with awesome views.
A foggy day for the Blanca portion, but cleared up for Ellingwood. Coming down was the worst part.
Quick side-trip as the snow approached. Trip report
Started up at 5:00AM from my parking spot 3.5 miles up from TH on Como Lake Rd. reached summit at 10:36AM. Back down to my truck at 3:23PM. My 47th 14'er and Sangre de Cristo finale......sweet!
A really excellent route. Can find fun 4th and low 5th class stuff to stay directly on the ridge. Awesome views of Little Bear, Blanca, and the traverse.
Made the top around 2pm on a great day after Lil Bear and Blanca.
Climbed Ellingwood Point together with Blanca from Blue Lakes.
Started at the base and then went camped at Blue Lakes (much much better then Lake Como). We did Blanca and Ellingwood. We then took the ridge towards Blue Lakes from Ellingwood but then found a cool and ***easy looking*** chute that led down to Crater Lake. That was one of the scariest things I have done. There was an open mineshaft at the bottom that my friends went to explore. Bad idea but they said it was worth it, I was content outside. Crazy chute with lots and lots of loose rockfall...a huge rock sheered off and flew right by use. We were lucky to come out of that safe.
Climbed via the west ridge. one of the best 3rd class scrambles i have done in Colorado.
Standard route for a first-time ascent with trishapajean and Cimarron. Long, miserable approach; dynamite summit. Gorgeous weather.14er #44.
