Emory Peak
Beautiful ~3 hour morning climb to the summit from the parking lot by the Chisos Basin store. I never climbed Emory before and should have looked more closely at the summit area on the approach. The trail ends at a rock window gap between two peaks. From that position, one cannot tell which is taller and there is no clear indication of an ascent route on either. I made the mistake of scrambling up the one to the left first. At the top, I noticed it was about 5m shorter than the other. I made my way down again and it took a small bit of time to figure out an ascent route based on my ability for the other (hint: the easiest I found was around to the right from the trail end at the gap across a small rock pile and up a steep gully or gap on the northern side). On a disappointing note, there is antennae and solar-equipment junk at the top which greatly taints the aesthetic of Texas' most prominent peak. There are plenty of other peaks around that appear to be prominent and clear enough to receive or transmit signals in most directions. For a national park, I just hope there was sufficient thought that went into that decision. But I have my suspicions there was not.

Second NP high point
The climb was great. Much different than any mountain/peak that I have climbed to date. Views were also 100% different. It just goes to show that no mountain is the same. Loved it and suggest anybody that goes to Big Bend NP goes to Emory Peak.

Great Trip
Saw big black bear as we drove down towards the campsite. Great weather for camping and hiking. Scramble at the summit was fun. Stood 15 ft from a mule deer, watching it eat and roam, pretty cool.

Beautiful way to experience the parkSomehow I did not sign this before; discovered this doing research for a friend headed to Big Bend.
Beautiful views of the entire park and valley. Fun scrambling near the top. If there is one hike you do in Big Bend, this would be one to consider.
