Excellent loop route

Excellent loop route

I've climbed this a couple of times. May 2, 2015, I went on a Mounties' trip, and think that route was near-optimal. Turn left off the Wonderland Trail, and head up the East ridge. This is a very nice climbers' trail with almost no brush. At 5900', contour left along a bench, following game trails through an open forest. At the "gully" way-point, the slope to the left looks a bit steep, but it's straightforward to gain the ridge, maybe 35-40 deg max. From there it's a simple climb over open slopes. Due to a very low snow year, the trail was melted out below the summer footbridge crossing. I was on this trail in mid-June, 2011, and we were on snow after leaving the car, and able to cross Frying Pan Creek on a snow-bridge higher up before the trail heads up towards Summerland. Thanks for posting!

I'm thinking about trying this one. Any need for ice axe or traction?

Six weeks ago (May 2, 2015) the snow was soft, so traction devices weren't necessary. I used my axe ascending the slope South of the "gully" way-point, and a few places along the ridge. The route may be mainly melted out by now this year. If climbing during normal years, before August I would be inclined to take my axe and yak-tracks just in case.
