You're right. It's a long way to drive to get on some rocks in southern California. Being at 4000 feet, J Tree can get pretty cold during the winter months. I used to love climbing when it was cold. First, because there was less competition for the routes, second, because getting a quiet campsite was easier. Nowadays, my fingers are too soft and weak for the rough textured rocks of Joshua Tree. Oh well, such is life.
