Good and informative page. I don't know the area so I can only judge by what you write and this seems to sum it up quite nicely. I have two suggestions, however:
in the overview you could start out with the general aspects of the tower: where in the Sawtooths it is (east or west) and what the general size (1000ft?) and rock composition (granite?) is.
your pictures seem a bit blurred which probably was caused by shrinking them to 650 x nn pixels. Why don't you sharpen them a bit (!) before posting?
Thanks for the positive comments- One of the inherent difficulties with creating pages on most Sawtooth mountains will be the general available information. A web search on Finger of Fate, The Arrowhead, Horstmann, Williams Peak etc. returns virtually no information. My sources of info come from actual experience, a magazine from 1975, some topos in a Sun Valley climbing shop, and maybe the word of a friend. While this makes for a thin web page, it makes for a very uncrowded (A lot of the Sawtooth peaks see less than 1 ascent per year) and rewarding actual climb. Regards
Excellent page on a very COOL formation. We have made 2 attempts in the last 2 years and still no cigar.....gotta be jinxed on this one or something...oh well, there's 2006.
The standard route up Feel Free (aka "Tippy Toes") was originally rated a 5.8 but is now rated a 5.10. Two of the variations (the overhang and the the right hand variation) on Feel Free were rated hard 5.9 in the early 70s. You might want to up the grade so as to not sandbag anyone or go climb it and let me know what you think. It was always considered to be a whole notch harder than the Open Book. Heck, I was told the Open Book was a 5.6 the first time I did it.
A wilderness permit IS REQUIRED to be in the Sawtooth Wilderness. Permits are free and available at all trailheads accessing the Finger of Fate.
If you are camping remember campfires MUST be on a fire pan or fire blanket in this area. Campfire rock rings are ILLEGAL.
If you replace webbing on a route please cut out the old, weathered webbing.
Let's treat this Wilderness with the respect it deserves.
