What are the wands for?

To measure glacier flow? Guideposts in a white-out?

Re: What are the wands for?

Wands are to mark out camp. When camping on a glacier, it is generally a good idea to probe out the area on which you are going to stay for crevasses. You then mark the "safe" area with a few wands, so you don't accidentally step out during a white-out, as you say
