An easy hike with jaw-dropping views of Hallets, Longs, and all of RMNP! Should have bagged Hallets, but I guess that gives me an excuse to go back!
Climbed with Peter, Fabio and Charles. Absolutely freezing and windy above treeline. Miserable and beautiful! Ha!
i remember a late afternoon lightning storm on the way down
Great freezing cold day with Charles D, Fabio, and Kristin. I drank a really cold hefe weisen in a really hot shower afterwards.
Been up this mountain a few times actually. I used to have a yearly trip that involved hiking from Bear Lake to Kawaneechee visitor centre and through big meadows. Since Flattop mtn. is on the way, it's a nice side trip!
Hiked from Bear Lake to Grand Lake. Descended via North Inlet trail.
Stopped enroute to Hallet Peak. Great view of Emerald Lake below.
The wind was blowing, snow was falling, avalance danger that I avoided, but I cramponed my butt to the top with a cool 15 foot vertical ice wall - old snow that was ice, climb at the end at the top of the gully . Glad that it was the first big snowfall of the season. Good test of Winter mouuntaineering skills.
It also helped that two buck elk were at the top welcoming me to the continental divide.
I have used this mountain so many times to summit other great peaks in the park, such as Hallets, Otis, Taylor, Powell, Notchtop, Knobtop, Gabletop, and Sprague Mountain. The hike from Bear Lake to Grand Lake over Flattop is also a good hike, but too much downhill for me.
Crossed Flattop after Bighorn Flats on Continental Divide traverse from Milner Pass to Bear Lake. At this point (~4pm) storms chased us across Flattop and down to treeline.
awesome views, great access to Hallett if you want the easy way up
On the way to Hallett/Otis
bagged this one on the way to summit Hallett
climbed with hallett peak
My wife and I had a very pleasant hike to the summit. We had a snack on boulders overlooking Tindal glacier, and decided to pass on a scramble up to the summit of Hallet (maybe next year).
Second time on Flattop on route to a second summit of Hallett. I made my first winter visit to RMNP this past April (2005) and would like to make Flattop my first winter ascent on my next visit.
Hiked to summit with my dad.
The early overcast that I worried about on the ascent burned off and revealed a sunny and calm summit. Ascended via the right side of Tyndall Glacier and descended on the standard trail. Great Day!
It is definately appropriately named...the summit is HUGE and FLAT! Went on to climb Hallett. Will be back for these two for some good snow routes!
broke trail in fresh snow all the way up! The clouds broke open just as we reached the top and closed back up on us just as we turned to come down.
