From where I parked in Long Valley to the SW, it was just over 5mi to the summit. Even the loop I made including Rocky Peak totaled just over 12mi. Not sure why you thought the route from that side would be longer...
Thanks Bob, although the entrance to Long Valley Road says it is private, frankly, you can drive up and not find issues. I will correct the pages with this option.
