Football crazy ?

Ken and Johnnie seem hynotised by the drama of the 2008 European football competion on the telly of the excellent Hotel Ciria bar in Benasque. Or maybe they are just lacking nourishment until their 'Platos combinados con lomo' arrive. Just what you need after a hard day on the hills.

DrJohnnie ...

Neither rain, sleet, hail, or the dead of
night will keep Ken & Johnnie from their
appointed rounds. However ... an electrical
storm could knock out the telly!

Re: DrJohnnie ...

Hi Larry,
living in the UK we have to be used to inclement weather, so we hope our trips to Spain will give us a break. This year though we had mixed luck, we didn't get one view from our first three tops. Still as you said, we always managed to get back to the bar at night so no complaints there. As our team didn't make it to the Championships we were kinda dispassionate observers and probably did more supping than cheering.
all the best Johnnie

Re: DrJohnnie ...

Yes. I must apologize if I have your name
misspelled. We use the word John with a 'h' here in the states.

There are many circumstances we have no control over. Have you ever been to Australia, DrJonnie? I was just wondering if
they have electrical storms in the Land Down
Under. Seems like they might with all the
wildfires they have.

Not that I'm trying to create an international incident proclaiming all wildfires are BAD. Like you, I'm just an
observer hoping wisdom will prevail one of
these days. Have a great week, mate!

What's in a name?

Hi Larry, Don't worry about the spelling, I was Christened John after my grandfather but my wife and kids call me Johnnie.
I've not been to Aussie yet, I've always meant to visit my relatives in NSW but not got around to it yet, maybe one day I will make it. Wildfires there are getting worse I guess, out in the bush they are a normal factor and the flora & fauna evolved in that scenario. But in the coastal areas which are populated they are very serious. It seems like California is suffering the same way and areas in the Mediteranean too.
cheers Johnnie (or Jonnie or John)

Re: What's in a name?

FINAL question - what is the BREW that you
'blokes' are drinking there? Is it ale? I
thought ale was of a darker colour, and lite
beer was a lighter shade of pale.

I must research this subject further! Thank you, John. - Larry of AZ

Beer ?

Ah good point Larry, there is not much choice in most of Spain its Lager or Lager!,
Its a light style of beer that we call keg in the UK. i.e. not "real ale" as we CAMRA members prefer. I've only come across one brew pub in Spain and that was in Plaza Santa Ana in Madrid.

You are one of my kin!

Definitely, I also think a plato combinado con lomo and a beer are the best end for a mountain day. Glad to see there are sensible, clever (hehehe...)englishmen left around. Thanks for posting this picture covering an "unknown" aspect of climbing
All the best

A Bright Future?

Hi Yatesec,
we've lived with disapointments for so long, a wee glimmer of light would be nice.

Re: A Bright Future?

Hi Johnnie,
Typical Brit, aren't you? The letdowns are long over, Capello might not be able to work miracles the way Redknapp does, but he knows his job well enough. Plus the England players don't need miracles to play well. Croatia already beaten at home, and what shall I say? (I'm Polish)

Re: A Bright Future?

yes matey I'm pretty typical. We did so badly in the Worlds & Euros over recent years that any optimism is well suppresed.
I guess "watch this space" is our motto now.

Clear Illustration

And the photo above is a clear illustration that two very British men are watching that space. Have fun watching (myself watching City vs Bolton at the moment; not much fun this time) and climbing! I'll keep my fingers crossed for England. (And I hope I can try those "clavijas" of Ordessa one day)

OK Jacek,
thanks for your support and I hope you make it to the Pyrennees. We met Andrej one of your countrymen in Benasque a couple of years back. He seemed to be having a good time.

Re: A Bright Future?

there's been a slight rise in optimism Jacek, I think Fabio has taken a tougher line than some past managers to reduce the "Prima Donna" attitudes of some of our "Star" players. i.e. don't play as you are expected to and you will be back on the bench or on the plane home! We are hoping it continues.

Football Psychology

Jacek, the art of management in any sphere is a difficult one to master (as I know from my previous career) and there are quite a few different but effective styles. However, I think that "charisma" is more important than management style and it is that I think which gains respect. As you implied earlier Redknap has it but in a people friendly way whereas Capello has it in a more authoritative mein. Both seem to work, albeit in different ways. Maybe it's about individual personal respect between each player and the manager. If they all respect him in a similar way and can work together in the same mindset, then that must engender a kind of synergy that gets more output success from the team than just the sum of the individual players. Hope I'm not boring you?
cheers Johnnie
