Fruits of European Cranberrybush

Fruits of European Cranberrybush

European Cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus) is also sometimes called Guelder-rose. It grows in Polish mountains up to the elevation of 1000 meters in damp forests and meadows. The fruits ripen from July to August. When they are ripe, they will be bright red. Each fruit has one flat seed inside which is also of red color. The fruit is edible in small quantities, with a very acidic taste. It is however very mildly toxic, and may cause vomiting or diarrhea if eaten in large amounts. How do you call Viburnum

in Polish? Nice image for the season - the plant may be even prettier once the leaves turn red later in the fall!

Re: How do you call Viburnum

Viburnum is Kalina in Polish. Kalina is a common subject of many Polish folk songs. It is a symbol of youth, beauty and life. There are many villages called Kalina around Poland. It can also be a woman's first name. Greetings Henryk

Nice!

A popular Russian folk dance is named Kalinka too. The berries are not native to Western North America as far as I can tell, but one can buy them in nurseries under the name "Highbush Cranberry". So there are some I can pick - shhh! - and turn into Kalina brandy :)
