Fruits of Glossy Buckthorn

Fruits of Glossy Buckthorn

Glossy Buckthorn (Frangula alnus) is a shrub common in lower elevations of Polish mountains. In the Tatras it does not grow above 900 meters. The fruits are navy blue or purplish-black when ripe. They are slightly poisonous. Bark of glossy buckthorn can be used to treat bowel disorders. However, fresh bark contains chemicals, including emodin, that cause severe vomiting. For use in medicine, the bark must be aged for at least one year. The Low Beskid - The slope of Mount Mogila - October 17, 2007.

Aged for one year?

Very good! In America, we have the Alderleaf Buckthorn (Rhamnus alnifolia) is also a shrub that grows approximately 5ft tall - enjoys wet, brushy places. Valuable information! Thank you, Henryk!!!
