Re: Amazingly amazing!

You know, this was a very irregular outing. Although my feet were hurting on the soft tissues of my toes at the end (it turned out I had caused deep bruising in them), the rest of me felt fine the next day, and by the following evening my feet barely felt the hike! I suspect this has to do with the route being mostly on trail vs. boulder-hopping!

What an achievement!

Loved reading the report. Looking to make the trek up Gannett this summer. Don't know if I can do it as fast as the two of you though. Pretty amazing!

Wow!

We did this route 2 years, but I won't tell you how long it took us R/T from our camp at Lower Titcomb lake. Twenty-four hours car-to-car is awesome, and a bit sick, I might add.

Gannett in a day

I just had this argument with a guy that I met hiking- he said that it couldn't be done in a day and I said that I knew that it had been done in a day-this was a few years ago by this guy (Peter Baker, I believe) who went from the west, starting out at the trailhead at the Green River/Lakes. This is probabaly the shortest way.

But the way that you guys went- Dudes- my hat's off to you guys. I admire your confidence and ability. Your trip report is really great and clearly illustrates the state of grace achieved when conceptualization and ability come together.

Awesome!

Great story and good descriptions of the trail! I'm wanting to do this peak in a day as well... Gonna hafta find a friend or two crazy enough to attempt it with me! So..... did you guys ever attempt the WURL?? And how did that go? I live in Alpine, and have had a couple friends attempt it. Would love to hear about your experience too.

Re: Awesome!

"So..... did you guys ever attempt the WURL?? And how did that go?"

I wish! That was a peak fitness point for me before other life things kept me away from SLC, then more involved in technical routes. However, I am recovering from a several-year break from injuries and surgeries and have come back to SLC, so I am tentatively looking at the WURL as a fitness recovery goal for next year. I'll let you know if I'm able to give it a go!

Way to endure

Man, you have my respect. And your story encourages me to push on to Gannett sooner than later, for I just this past weekend made it to the north end of Titcomb Basin and back to Elkhart in approximately 22 hours, which was unintentional really (contrained by time due to poor planning that equaled running out of food). Not that I want to do Gannett in 24 hours since I have limited mountaineering experience, but Gannett in 2 to 3 days is arguably very manageable for those who can endure. My biggest concern is the glacier. Sounded tricky enough, and indeed, potentially deadly.

Re: Way to endure

Nice job on the 'recon'! :-)

I wouldn't consider the glacier that bad as far as glaciers go, but if you're inexperienced with them then you could have a fatal accident. It is probably only safe to walk on unroped when the crevasses are exposed. There aren't that many of them and they are easy to avoid when you see them, but they are there and are big enough to swallow you. The iffiest part is crossing the bergschrund to gain the couloir, but that can vary a lot based on conditions.
