Geology of Picacho

View W to west summit (the prominent notch is between the two summits). The top part of the mountain is made of alternating layers of harder welded tuff, and soft ash-flow tuff. Where the softer tuff has eroded back, there are now wide ledges. The best use of a helmet is to keep you from hitting you head on the "ceilings" of the ledges!
