Giant Helleborine

Giant helleborine (Epipactis gigantea) is a rare orchid in much of the western U.S. where it grows in springs and stream sides in arid areas. It also grows in cooler coniferous mountains, but then is almost always associated with hot springs. This photo was taken in the Salmon River Canyon of western Idaho. May 2005
