Glacier Peak as seen from the...

Glacier Peak as seen from the summit of eastern neighbor Seven Fingered Jack. Note the dust-filled canyon in the center of the picture. I have noted that phenomenon in other trips to the east side of Glacier Peak, and while on the mountain itself. There must be some extremely unstable terrain in that canyon.

Chocolate Creek

It looks like all the dust is above the vast moraines below the Chocolate Glacier. Geologists call this the Great Fill: a long ridge of sand and gravel on the eastern side of the mountain, and north to Gamma Ridge. In fact, Chocolate Creek cut through this unstable mix, finally reaching the valley floor. [source: Routes and Rocks]
