Words fail me to describe how great (and beautiful) this hike was. It was like nothing I'd ever done before. I'm hoping to return in 2010 and do a rim-to-rim hike.
The hardest hike I have ever done. We were so unprepared. We didn't have any of the right gear, or enough food, it was so bad. It was beautiful and I would do it again, next time I will be prepared.
Day 1 - went from the North Rim via the Kaibab trail to the Bright Angel Campground next to Phantom Ranch; spent the night there. Day 2 -took the Bright Angel trail to the south rim, then took the Kaibab trail back to Bright Angel campground, spent a second night there. Day 3 - hiked back to the North Rim. Got very lucky on the weather as the tempertures never exceeded 95F.
South Kaibab --> B.A. campground/Phantom (cold brews!) --> Bright Angel late October '08
a couple days after my 16th birthday (celebrated on mt charleston) we drove to the north rim of the grand canyon and stayed at the quaint jacobs lake lodge. I took a hike to Cape Final, a wonderful secluded "diving board" of an overlook. saw only a few souls on trail and none at the overlook. took a bit of class 3ish scramblng at the end. i may have ended up at a different spot, but a great view and fun scramble/hike in the end

Wonderful hike; Took the Hermit trail down to Granite Rapids first day. Tonto Trail to Indian Gardens second day. Watched sunrise on Plateau Point then hiked out via Bright Angel third day.
I have both backpacked and day hiked to Phantom Ranch on seperate occassions. My backpack trip, while I was in college during spring break. Very cold on the rim with a couple feet of snow. 80 degrees at Phantom ranch.
Started hiking 2:30 afternoon and planed to go only to the Bright Angel. Kept walking up to Plateau Point. Gorgeous views. Finished in the dark. Temperature 110°F, newer drink so much water in one day.
Went R2R (N to S) on day 1, then cycled 80+ miles to base of humphries on day 2 then climbed humphries on day 3. Meg (my wife) and a bunch of other family/friends came along. Great adventure.
South Rim to Bright Angel Campground via South Kaibab (down) and then Bright Angel (up). The trip of a lifetime. Next up- North Rim!
backpacked 45 miles in 3 days... SRim to NRim to SRim... down S Kaibab trail, up & down N Kaibab trail, and then up Bright Angel trail... camped at Cottonwood and Bright Angel campgrounds... 14 miles on first day, 21 miles on second day, and 10 miles on third day. Perfect weather. Awesome trip.
I've done some pretty good hikes; but this is one of my all time favorites!!!
Nice day hike...Steep, and a bit rocky, but certainly cuts down on the traffic of Bright Angel!
South Kaibab to Phantom Ranch then up Bright Angel back to the S Rim. Rained the second day. Saw 2 Elk, 1 Rattlesnake, and many deer.
Camped out two nights at Cottonwood. 1. Bright Angel to Cottonwood 2. Cottonwood CG to North rim and back 3. Cottonwood to S. Rim Via S. Kaibab
I've made 5 trips to the bottom over the years. They were all a lot of fun, but my favorite trip was with my Dad.
