But it looks like there hasn't been any cougars in the area until six or seven years ago.

With no predators (i.e. bears, dogs) to keep the cougars away, they flourish. Similarly, deer are thriving without substantial predators in the area.

It's the deer browse I was referring to -- the fern prairie is a bad sign but the two younger trees in your picture suggest that cougars must be back in town, reducing the deer activity a bit.

Anyway, you inspired me to post this one.
