Great Sand Dunes

The sand dunes in Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, CO cover 30-square miles. The high point along the dune field about 1/4 way from the left is Star Dune (750 feet high). The high point about 1/4 way from the right is High Dune (650 feet high). The mountains in the background include Crestone Peaks (farthest peaks in the distance just to the right of Star Dune) and Mount Herard (the most prominent peak on the right side). Believe it or not, this is the same vantage point from which this telephoto image was taken only moments later. Imaged in August 2006.
