After ascending to the ridge and hitting North Peak we followed the ridge south to Greenhorn. Wildflowers in full bloom. Saw some bighorn along the ridge. Descended to Bartlett trail then back to TH. Road and trail are in perfect summer conditions.

Hike from the east is the real deal  Sucess!

Hiked from the east side starting just outside Rye. Almost 13 miles round trip with a whopping 5k feet of elevation gain. The last bit of trail is completely concealed by avalanche scar so be prepared to blaze your own trail through the trees to reach the talus field. From there, approach the north summit from the south side. It is a very steep ascent. There will be a very large cairn marking the top of the very broad, flat summit, though you can't see this from the botom of the talus field. My dog was able to climb the steep talus but did have some trouble getting through the downed trees in the avalanch scar. This hike may be more manageable from the west side until the avalanch debris has been cleared.

Only Small Grizzly Bears.  Sucess!

While eating breakfast in Colorado City, the friendly hotel owner asked my wife and I what we were doing today. I pointed out the window to Greenhorn Mountain, and told him we were going up there. He was impressed at our ambition and said he had never been up there. His son wanted to go, but he joked that he was afraid of getting lost. With a foreign accent, he assured us that there is nothing dangerous in those mountains: "No mountain lions and only small grizzly bears." Ha ha. We hiked up the trail to the saddle south of North Peak, then across the ridge to Greenhorn. We had a nice conversation on the summit with two women who hike the peak quite often. We decended the east slopes and hiked back to the trailhead along the old road.

Amazing Day with Son  Sucess!

Started at the upper trailhead after a very long drive. My seven year old son Ian's first unassisted summit over 12,000'. Great weather day. Also did a side trip up North Peak.

Bartlett Trail  Sucess!

Saved this summit for my last Colorado county highpoint. The Bartlett Trail is still good almost to treeline. It's a long ways to hike compared to the other route, but saves a lot of driving.

The Greenhorn  Sucess!

This peak has incredible views for its size... the Wet Mountains are well worth a detour! Didn't care much for Bishop's Castle though...

Saw some unique spiny plants that looked something like wicked cactii/octopii (cactopuses?).

First 12er  Sucess!

I moved here in May, and kept calling the forest service daily to figure out when the road was clear to the top. Once I was confident my 2wd could make it, I went for it. I nice easy hike, with a scramble at the end, via Barlett. Beautiful day.

Beautiful hike!  Sucess!

Beautiful hike, almost entirely above timberline. Did it with North Peak. Just over 6 miles, 1500' gain, about 2.5 hours. One of my favorites of the year.
