Stopped at Griffith because I started around noon from the south loop trail and hoped to summit Charleston (my original goal). It worked out the I bagged 2 summits that day--Griffith and Charleston.
Climbed the South Loop trail with a few buddies from college. Great time!
Awesome! That trail doesn't mess around with the climbing. Messed up and signed in as Oct. 30th instead of the 29th. Idiot. Second favorite summit next to Baldy.
Didn't have a route description and there was lots of fresh snow, so I just went straight up towards the peak. As much as waist deep snow to deal with. Coming down was lots of fun.
Came up South Loop with my wife to the meadows and pitched camp, hiked around the base of mountain among Bristlecone in late afternoon, summited @6:00 and headed down back to camp. Hiking Charleston tomorrow with our puppy.
Final peak on an unexpectedly scenic and enjoyable dayhike around the North Loop and South Loop trails, tagging Fletcher, Mummy, Lee, Charleston, and this en route. It would have been nice to continue on to Harris, but I had no exit strategy besides slogging back along the road to my car, so I decided that would have to wait for another time.
Great winter snowshoe in beautiful scenery. Here is a slide show of Griffith Peak with other hiking and nature pictures located on www.AdventureInternet.com
Easy hike via South Loop trail. It was a nice cool clear day too!
Nice hike. Later climbed it on snow en route to Charleston.
This was one of the first peaks I climbed. I did this with a group of other guys. Started out from the Harris Springs Trailhead. The views from the top were great.
bagged griffith on the way out from charleston on the south loop. this one made three peaks in two days. the views of vegas from here are superb. it almost makes you wish that you had a hang glider to be able to float all the way back down to the strip.
I climbed this one with my sister, Amy; her husband, Michael Eschenberg; my 4-year, 9-month old son, Lance; and my 35-month old son, Travis; six days after their sister Jackie was born (Mom and Jackie stayed home). Lance hiked most of the way without help, but Michael helped me take turns carrying Travis when he got too tired to keep hiking on his own. We all made the summit.
cp0915's posting below is right on the mark - this is a terrific day hike! The view from Griffith Peak is one of the very best in the Spring Mountains, and the trip up and down is far less taxing than the Charleston Peak death march.
Minimal patchy snow at the summit, and it's melting fast. My 8 year old made another summit. Woo Hoo!
July 23, 2005-A nice dayhike, the ground is damp from recent rains.
Previous Griffith summit dates:
2003 October 26: South Loop trail
2003 December 21: South Loop trail (with crampons)
2004 June 19: South Loop trail
2005 April 17: Echo Canyon Snow Route
2005 October 02: South Loop trail
2007 September 01: South Loop trail
2008 June 14: From the Griffith Peak trailhead, off Harris Springs Road, with DayHikerJr, age 9-1/2 months, and his mommy. (Carried DayHikerJr.)
Skinned up both times w/ a splitboard and had awesome rides down!
On the 17th we had some stiff wind and it gets me to want to break out the kiteboarding kite and see if I can make it from Griffith to Charleston Peak riding the wind!
The log book is currently burried under over 20' of snow according to GPS.
Word of caution, snow is melting quickly and we saw some rockfall, so be carefull of flying objects and enjoy the beauty

We had hoped to replicate my brother's truly heroic ascent of Charleston Peak the previous 4th of July, but we were forced to settle for Griffith Peak instead. No matter - we were cashed, the views were wonderful, and this fine peak gave us a real sense of accomplishment.
