Gumweed braving the snow

Gumweed braving the snow

Curlycap Gumweed with the sunlit Oquirrh Mountains in the background, still blooming no matter the December snowstorms. 12/10/08 Grindelia squarrosa ... literally "scaly / with parts sticking out sideways" in Latin. One of a few dependable late-season foothill prairie flowers, the gumweed is very easy to id. If in doubt, gently squeeze the scaly green parts of the flowers (scientifically known as involucre) and feel the gummy residue on your fingertips.
