This is a loop over Harris to Griffith and Down the South Loop Trail (SLT). I would have taken the old SLT, but it seemed snowier.
Nothing on this route up Harris was above class 2. The N side seems much more alpine, compared to the dry slog up the Harris Springs route. You hit bristlecones and doug fir about 8600', and there is a pleasant grassy meadow on the way up. Very Little brush, if you pick the route carefully.
Update: as of 8-12-07, the USFS no longer allows all day parking at the ranger station. However, you can park at Stanley B Springs trailhead, cross to the S side of the road, and take the woodland path ~ 1.7 miles down to the ranger staion/campground, if you want to do the loop. The full loop has ~5200' elevation gain.
