Via Hidden Forest Cabin  Sucess!

Was unsuccessful the first time do to an under estimate of the time to get there...spent a long time of the gravel road, so I turned around at the cabin. Have since went back and made the peak

DEADMAN  Sucess!

No, not me..the canyon. Nice trip up the typical route past the cabin to the SW ridge and back. The canyon is spectacular in the afternoon sun - a must see! Fortunately the summer temps were still not here yet, so the hike temp was quite enjoyable.

Deadman Canyon Route  Sucess!

Rough roads to trailhead. Good use trail in the canyon and most of the way along the ridgeline. Traversed some snowy sections around the rock outcroppings.

via Air plane crash site  Sucess!

After we made it to the cabin in 2 hour, we have decided to check the air plane crash site first. After we checked the site, we climbed the hill that was the opposite side of the Hayford Peak. We tried to follow the ridge line instead of scramble down and up to the Hayford. But we found out that ridge line didn't connected to the Hayford Peak after we climed up and down 3 hills. It turned to big loop hike. 20 miles and more than 5,000 ft total elevation gain.

Made it a loop route,  Sucess!

My roommate and I did this today as a day hike. We started in Deadman Canyon then headed north from the cabin to the summit. Instead of descending the same route we decided to follow the dry stream bed to the east of the summit and it ended up taking us to the south edge of the cabin. If you want to make this hike a little easier on the climb up then that dry stream bed certainly seems like an more mellow climb. Great climb all around and I certainly want to return to the cabin sometime to camp out.

Deadman Canyon  Sucess!

Very cool area - I loved how the terrain changed as we went into the canyon. The cabin was very cool also. I did this as a dayhike and did Charleston the day before.

Dayhike  Sucess!

Dayhiked from deadman canyon. For an ultra, this one does not have the greatest of views.

Finally  Sucess!

After having this peak on my "to do" list for 20+ years, I climbed it today after getting a last minute invite from my brother, Barton last night. Joining us were Dick Wimmer (hike organizer), his son-in-law Aaron, Scott Seegmiller, Alan Pinkerton, Rick Holmes and several other of Dick's hiking buddies. Weather was nice for May (not too hot). There were still patches of snow on the north-facing slopes.

2x in snow, usual route  Sucess!

I've been up twice when there was snow, once from ~6300', once from ~8000'. This hike is too hot in the summer. As usual, I'm signing this after the fact as I cruise around looking for other info.

Great dayhike  Sucess!

Summited Hayford via deadman cyn in four hours. Snow was patchy up near the cabin and was patchy along the ridgeline. Nice, well marked route. Clear, cool, light winds. Could see the snow capped Sierra crest on the far western horizon. Great day on the mountain.

Deadman Canyon & cross country route  Sucess!

Redsplashman (see below entry) and my self had the mountain all to our selves as snow made the peak a bit more interesting. Sacha was a great hiking companion and we had an enjoyable day and it was nice to get this one in the winter.

Hayford Peak  Sucess!

Excellent Views all around! Myself and SP Dean, who hiked with me, were the 1st ones to sign the register this year.

Deadman's Canyon  Sucess!

We came prepared for a snow climb. It turned out there was very little snow left. Still a nice day. Photos are here: Hayford Peak hike

Deadman's Canyon  Sucess!

This was a nice hike, except for the thunderstorm that chased me out of the canyon on the way down. At least the rain was refreshing.

Route Climbed: Deadman Canyon (duh)  Sucess!

summited this dry peak with a great climbing partner. we left extra water in the cabin which got stolen by some kids that were looking for waterfalls to play in. we had the last laugh when we told them that they had hiked into the wrong mountain range. that must have hurt after hiking four miles down a rocky wash in flip-flops. otherwise a great day, and great start to my four day climbing adventure.

Very hot, several members of our group ran out of water. Luckily I carried extra for training purposes. They don't tease me so much anymore.

Route Climbed: Deadman Canyon to SW Ridge  Sucess!

Duane and I climbed Hayford for our ninth Ultra prominence peak in nine days. We started up the draw from the cabin, but quickly tired of this and headed up to the ridge west of the draw. There we found a cairned use trail that led to Hayford's SW ridge. On the west face we skirted the rock outcrops on the left, staying close to the base of the rocks. Nice cool day, even on the descent. Found a flat tire on the rental on our return to the TH. Happily it was a nail instead of a rock, so it was fixable!
