Hiking to the Overlook

Hiking to the Overlook

from the "erratic" boulder, this is the type of terrain you encounter. The Overlook area can be seen on the left side of this picture. Be aware that this is rattlesnake country and act accordingly (meaning watch where you step and wear appropriate clothing) 5-28-07

Geez ...

Eastern WA does have rattlesnakes! A buzzer just went off inside my head ... that's the reason my grandmother, who was born in Cle Elum, later moved to the west side, where
there are very few snakes, if any! Thanks for the enlightenment, Dean!!!! : )

Re: Geez ...

On local Badger mountain, I saw an interesting event unfold in front of me. A woman hiking down the trail suddenly stopped as if frozen and remained stone still as I approached. On the trail in front of her was a garter snake which she thought was a rattler. I flicked the poor little thing off the trail with my hiking pole and explained to her that it was not a rattler. She said she wasn't taking any chances and I couldn't really argue with that line of thinking. I haven't seen too many rattlers near the tri cities but I know the potential is always there.

Re: Geez ...

Well good for you! That woman hiker must have been a firm believer of the saying, "The only good snake is a dead snake." Her belief system is still valid, but it differs from mine. I love snakes!!!
So, I would probably LOVE eastern Washington. The Columbia River is grand!

Re: Geez ...

I'll have to tell you about Badger Mtn sometime, maybe even put up a page on it. Badger is the highest local hiking mountain in the area and it was falling to suburbian sprawl but some civic minded hikers stepped in and saved the mountain for all to enjoy. Neat story.
