Hohe Wand

Hohe Wand

The Hohe Wand is a 30 min drive south of Vienna. There are 100s of climbing routes and at least 10 via ferratas. We did HTL Steig via ferrata in a rain, hail, and snow. The HTL is 300 m long, and was one of the toughest via ferrata's I ever did. I guess the weather did not help much either. The rock was so slippery! The HTL crosses the line where via ferrata becomes a sport climb. I would do better in rock climbing shoes and not in my keen's, but I guess due to the weather it did not really matter. The wire rope protection gets overhanging at some sections. There are no metal pins, pegs, or ladders. It's just you, a wire rope and the friction between your shoes and the smooth limestone IF the rock is dry.
