Ryder and I met with with Ken Jones the night before and camped at the Miner Lake CG. There was a bit of routefinding along the way but we for the most part were able to keep to the trail. From beyond Kelly Lake we broke off trail and gained the SE ridge to the summit. Spectacular views and spectacular area.
Hiked into heart lake and set up camp on 06/07 and summited that afternoon and got in an awesome 1400 vert of skiing. Climbed back up to 10200 on 06/08 for another 1000 vert, before our hike out.
Went up the southwest ridge and down the southeast ridge, the southwest ridge was very enjoyable. The view of the Big Hole Valley is excellent, and forming a loop with SW and SE ridges makes for a great route.
Climbed in the early 1990's via Rock Island Lakes.
made summit ,, up west ridge, down east, spent night at upper rock island lake, cheers,
A really fine mountain! I'd love to do some more exploring in the West Big Hole!
Beautiful area. Only saw one other couple hiking the peak. Great views in every direction.
Nice scramble up from Rock Island Lakes. Beautiful views. Was surprised to find a pretty good climbers trail on this remote peak. The summit register, with 10-20 logs for each year over the past few years, mentioned good skiing off of the North face chutes. Might be worth a try....
I climbed Homer Youngs when I was 7 or 8, lots of false summits
The Big Hole Valley offered up another memorable experience. Certainly a high light of the season for me.
