Looking north out of Stewart Pocket towards AZ's Mogollon Rim. The 'bump' on the rim (dark ridge on the horizon) is 6,380' Diamond Point, named after the quartz crystals (diamonds) it contains. There's also a fire lookout tower atop Diamond Point.
The clear quartz crystals of Diamond Point
have been said to resemble New York Herkimer
diamonds, and the area also contains geodes.
(Over 4,000-acres have been closed off in
recent years to all rock collecting.)
'Building Block Rock' is seen to the left.
The area was a granitic pluton that cooled underground, then was exposed to the surface by the same mountain-building episode that raised the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
