Great forum,

you just switched two titles with the pictures. The picture in the Gear section is in fact Tracy climbing near Cogne. Picture is taken from the Italien Ice album.

Cheers,
Jeroen

UK ice routes

Just noticed you've Tower Ridge on the list of ice routes. Just to clarify - it's not an ice route. It's mixed ridge climb. Point Five Gully and Zero Gully definately ARE ice routes and very famous ones at that. Together with Minus One Gully they constritute the three big ice routes on Ben Nevis but there are many more (subject to conditions!). The and Ledge Route is another Ben Nevis ice route on SP

Re: UK ice routes

Actually, it looks like Tower Ridge is included with a rating of "???" - I would guess that Ed was as confused as I am :) Any idea what a proper commitment grade and M-rating would be for this one ?

I took a look at the other route pages you've listed, and I'm a bit confused by their ratings as well. I'm going to take the following guesses - please correct me if I'm wrong :

- Point Five Gully : V, WI5
- Zero Gully : IV, WI4
- Ledge Route : II-III, WI ?

Thanks for any info - suggestions for improvement of the ratings would be highly appreciated !

Re: UK ice routes

I'd say both Point Five and Zero Gully are about a WI4. Point five is slightly steeper but Zero has a lack of belays making it more serious. The Ledge Route is quite easy and only about a WI2.
As for Tower Ridge, it's more of an Alpine winter ridge scramble with some difficulties higher up. You can do a lot of the route moving together. I don't think it's difficult enough for an M gade - although I don't really understand M grades just as you don't understand Scottish!

Re: UK ice routes

OK, I added links to these three routes and removed Tower Ridge. Let us know if this still doesn't look right !

banks lake

I think it would be good to consolidate all the Banks Lake climbs (all the Washington climbs under areas). They are listed in the area section and should be in the route section.

Re: banks lake

I'm not sure what you mean ... I see a Banks Lake area which is parent to several routes, such as The Emerald.

Perhaps it would be better to direct this inquiry to the author of the Banks Lake area ? Maybe you two could collaborate on content for this area and reorganize it in a way that makes sense ... neither Ed nor I live in WA.

Re: banks lake

Agree with Rob. The Forum is just a way to find ice-related stuff on SP. If there's a better way to present the Banks Lake stuff, then you should contact the people who maintain it. I have no clue about the area.

"Ice is for pouring Whiskey on!"

Maybe I'm just being pedantic, but I'm betting Tom Patey would spell it 'Whisky'. :)

Really useful page!

Another German resource

Hi, yesterday I climbed ice on the Jochberg. Tommi (the author of the Sylvenstein ice page featured here) has also made an ice-oriented page for this mountain. Multipitch ice from WI3 to 4/5, and some mixed too. The page is here: http://www.summitpost.org/jochberg/228183

Re: Another German resource

thanks, I had already pmed Tommi, what I really need is a German Ice Climbing page similar to the Utah-Colorado pages I just formed....so it can be attached there...trying to make this so that when someone is looking for ice in Germany, they can quickly see all we have available in one place...we have two pages in Bavaria or I would have linked it that way already...if one of you would rather do a Barvarian page, that would work to...having it all mixed in together makes it hard to search and collaborate information for the potential user, particularly if the tags are not done correctly for searches which is often the case..cheers
