Kidding?

I didn't think there were any "ice caves"
left in North America, with all the threats

It's just caused by spring run-off as I'm sure you guessed. See this picture. Nothing like as glamorous as an ice cave but good for a profile picture.

That's what those penitente-like sharp ice slabs look like anyway, very wicked shark teeth. The unwitting hiker is strolling right into his worst nightmare. (Like the picture though, great job)
