Indian Peel Tree

Indian Peel Tree

The large ponderosa pine on the right is an Indain peel tree. During difficult times, Indians would peel off bark to reach the edible cambium underneath. Then the trees would heal and grow around the cut leaving the scar shown here. Many of these trees still show the actual hack marks where the Indians cut at the bark. There are many of these trees near Red River in north central Idaho. They are considered archeological artifacts and protected. July 2004

Our Dog Jacky, years ago,

did this to hemlock trees (tsuga species) in an inneffective rage against chattering red squirrels scolding him from these trees. They still bear the marks. I should apply to Washington D.C. to see if they might be declared archeological relics and so protected.
