jeepers creepers.....

jeepers creepers.....

a common skimmer(dragonfly?) seems to me, very uncommon, although smiling, in this straight on macro image, with the huge eyes, antenna, etc. I wonder if the big camera lens appears alien to the skimmer? Olympus E-30 and Sigma 105 macro. July 2010

focus for the eyes

Thank you for your vote and comment. Macro shots have very limited depth of field. The photographer must opt for clear focus of the eyes first ( if eyes are involved). This creature looks so much like some sort of aircraft, complete with ball turret and radio antenna. Best regards....

Skimmer

Is this perhaps a newly emerged adult, wings et al not hardened, adult colors not yet fixed? Where and when?

Very good subject and shot! Thanks, sorry I did not notice it before.

Re: Skimmer

Thanks for your comments. Skimmer was photographed on wisteria in our yard in July 2010. We live in Argyle, north central Texas. Bug guide.net identifies the species as pachydiplax longipennis. Quite a name to be sure!...Best regards, Charles Baxter
