Long over due...

A page on the Kalmiopsis has been needed for a long time. Thanks for the post. You might link it to the Klamath Mountains page.

Re: Long over due...

Thanks for the suggestion Bubba. I linked to Klamath, Siskiyou, and Oregon Coast areas.

Re: Long over due...

Thanks for all the votes Dennis. Do you know if the Vulcan Peak area was burned? Have you climbed the peak? I have heard you can see the Pacific from there.

Re: Long over due...

I haven't done Vulcan yet. It is on my list. From the other peaks I've climbed, it looks like it was completely burned over. The southern part of the Kalmiopsis looks like it burned completely and very hot except in the bottom of a few of the very steep drainages where the fire just jumped across to the next ridge. On a clear day you should be able to see the ocean. It isn't that far away, only about 20 miles. Thanks for your votes also. Dennis

Good job Dennis

I did a 5-day solo backpack trip inspired by the Kalmiopsis Loop from Backpacking Oregon in June 2002. It reminded me very much of the Ventana Wilderness on the central California coast. I should have taken better pictures, now that I see how devastated the area is now :(

Re: Good job Dennis

Rob,

The Kalmiopsis was changed forever just a couple months after your backpack trip. It is still a special place only "different" than it was before the fire. Keep up the PT and positive attitude for your recovery. If you want to do an easy hike in the Kalmiopsis, drop me a line.

Dennis
