I think the layers in questions are not from the icefall, but it is more a mix of snow and ice on the rocky face.

This picture is from the camp at 5300m on the moraine, North summit cannot be seen from here, and we see part of the southern summit on the backgroud.

On the route I took, there was no ice at this period of the year, only hard snow ideal for a fast progression.

Edit 2009: Contrarily to what I wrote in my initial comment, I just noticed that it is not the South summit left in the background, but actually the upper slopes of the North (main) summit. The highest point is just hidden on the picture. This picture gives a better understanding on where is the true summit.
