Winter Knife edge  Sucess!

A superb climb. We traversed down the knife edge from baxter to Pamola. 65 mph winds made for a hair raising hike. Definatelt one of the Northeasts US best peaks

Fun despite the warnings  Sucess!

We arrived at Roaring Brook to clearing weather after a severe storm, planning to ascend via Chimney Pond and Saddle trails and descend via Knife Edge and Helon Taylor. The ranger initially talked us out of hiking that day. Dry Brook was a raging torrent and temperatures were dropping. After some delay and discussion, we fortunately decided to hike up and evaluate conditions for ourselves as we went. We were rewarded with a very fun hike and scramble in good conditions with amazing views in every direction. Departing the summit with only about two hours of light left, we decided to skip the Knife Edge in favor of the route we had ascended. HP43

Great hike  Sucess!

Have climbed Katahdin several times, via many routes. It is a great stomping ground no matter the season.

An Awesome Experience!  Sucess!

Without question, this will go down as my most memorable and favorite hike in the NE USA. I took the Hunt Trail to the summit. Within 10 minutes of my arrival, a man showed up who was completing the Appalachian Trail (5 months, 10 days). 10 minutes later, another man showed up with his completion. Then 10 minutes later, another man completed the trail. During my descent, I passed nubmerous other people who were completing the Appalachian Trail. Talking with those people, and seeing their expressions with a major accomplishment, was a great experience. As for the Hunt Trail, the rock scramble section was the hardest... not because of anything really technical, but because 50+ MPH winds kept knocking me down as I scurried up boulders, and I occasionally had to take brief refuges from wind by stopping between tall boulders. Strangely, there was very little wind on "Tableland" and no wind at the summit... which was the opposite of what I had expected. This was my 47th State Highpoint.

HP #28  Sucess!

Hiked out and back the hunt trail. Weather was cold and rainy. Views were outstanding. Well worth the long steep hike.

A Truly Amazing Place...  Sucess!

Left at 5 in the morning and summited via the Helon Taylor route. Descended via the Saddle Trail. Round trip was about 6 hours. Scrambling up the defined ridge of the Helon Taylor trail makes this peak truly special. And, the view from Chimney pond is, without question, the most alpine vista on the east coast. Period. I felt like I was on the wrong side of the country. I can't wait to go back and climb the armadillo next!

Perfect day with a little wind  Sucess!

Beautiful warm day with some wind towards the top. Completed the Hunt trail. More difficult than I anticipated.

Route Climbed: Chimney Pond-Cathedral-Knife's Edge-Helon Taylor  Sucess!

By far the best hike I've done thus far in New England. The scenery and trails are spectacular, the climbing is an adrenaline rush, and the views are magnificent. So long as the weather is good, Cathedral Trail and Knife's Edge are must hikes, but aren't for the faint of heart.

Knife-Edge Baby!  Sucess!

Had the honor of climbing this one the last day park was open before Irene came barreling thru! Fortunately - the weather held for us all day... and we got out before things got ugly..

Toughest Eastern Peak?  Sucess!

I made it up the Hunt trail with my friend Matthew on a particularly windy/cloudy day. I'd have to agree that this is the toughest peak I've encountered in the east - I'd say it's almost worthy of the Cascades!

Katahdin second attempt  Sucess!

The day before, I foolishly tried to force a climb through some inclement weather. But the next morning dawned clear and beautiful, so I stayed past my Baxter reservation and climbed the Abol slide en route to the summit. Best decision I could make. The Abol slide, the table, Baxter Peak, all amazing and well worth the trip.

The Greatest Mountain  Sucess!

Certainly one of the greatest mountains in the East. Amazing views in all directions. First state highpoint accomplished and it was well worth it.

9th State HP  Sucess!

Wow... what a hike! Absolutely stunning scenery and beautiful weather made for a perfect day. Originally intended on doing Helon Taylor and the Knife edge, but it was rather windy so we opted for Saddle instead.

Perfect  Sucess!

Amazing weather, 70+ degrees and fall colors, who could ask for more. This hike was more epic than i thought but an absolute blast. Up Cathedral down the Saddle
