Gerecse is a mountain range in north-western Hungary, in the Central Transdanubian region, between the ranges Vértes and Pilis and part of the Komárom-Esztergom County. A low limestone mountain situated between the town of Tatabánya and the Danube River. The Gerecse Mountains are part of the Transdanubian Mountains. Gerecse occupies an area of 850 km2 (20,300 ha). The highest point is Nagy-Gerecse at 634 m. The main rock is chalk and limestone.
Deciduous oak Quercus forests cover the lower slopes, with submontane forests of Quercus, Carpinus, Fagus, and karst scrub at higher altitudes. The area is 70% forest, 5% scrubland, 10% grassland, and 15% artificial landscapes. Yearly sunshine duration is around 1,980 hours. The average annual temperature above the height of 350 meters is 9.5 C (in January -2,8 C). The average annual precipitation is 640 millimeters.


A Gerecse, illetve Gerecse hegység röghegység a Dunántúlon, a Dunazug-hegység háromszög alakú, legnyugatibb része. Átlagos magassága 400 méter. Területe 850 km² . Legmagasabb csúcsa, a Nagy-Gerecse 634 méter magas. Túlnyomó részt dachsteini mészkő, kisebb részben felső triász dolomit alkotja. Üledékes építőanyagainak (mészkő, homokkő, agyag, márga) helyi formái közül nevezetesek a mészkő barlangjai, a jura-mészkő „vörösmárványa”, az eocén, oligocén rétegek szénbányái, a cement alapanyaga, a márga, a Dunára néző lejtők vastag löszrétegébe vágott mély utak, löszfalak.

Kis-Gerecse is one of the most popular climbing places in Hungary. It offers a large number of difficult routes for sports climbing. It has three overhanging walls – this is either reason for here has born lots of routes of IX, X and XI difficulty rates. The second factor is the rock: the Gerecse mountain is built by a rigid limestone, so due to the blasting mining came off some walls which are less articulated. Kis-Gerecse is a typical climbing place with tiny rims and margins, so it will test your forearms and condition.

The mine was discovered by the founders of the Hungarian sports climbing, András Kangyal, Kornél Ravadits and András Tiboldi, the very first routes were put up by them. Then came the second generation (Áron Urbanics, István Martincsák and many others) and they created the real hardcore routes.
The mine is visited regularly by polish climbers too, so they got one after the other the big games of Kis-Gerecse.

Magyarország legnehezebb sziklamászó útjait a Kisgerecse kőfejtőben találjuk. A kőbánya oldala erősen áthajlik - ez az egyik oka annak, hogy IX -es X-es fokozatú mászóutak mászóutak születtek itt. A másik tényező a kőzet. A Gerecse hegységet felépítő mészkő rideg, ezért aztán a robbantásos bányászás során tagolatlan falak jöttek létre. Kisgerecse tipikus apró peremes mászóhely, az ujjában legyen erő annak, aki itt belevág egy-egy útba...

A bányát a hazai sportmászás alapító atyái (Kangyal András, Ravadits Kornél, Tiboldi András) fedezték fel, az első utakat ők pakolták fel. Aztán jött a második generáció (Urbanics Áron , Martincsák István és még sokan mások), ők alkották meg az igazi hardcore utakat.

Tavasztól őszig a műfalak árnyékából kiszabadult fiatalok sorra ismételik az utakat. A bányát rendszeresen látogatják lengyel sziklamászók is, akik sorban ejtik el az Kisgerecse nagyvadait.

Az utak nehézségi eloszlása:

A mászáshoz 6-7 slingre és néhány kisebb ékre és friendre lesz szükséged (a clean utak mászásához).

Getting there – Megközelítés

From Budapest you can reach the climbing area quickly on the M1 higyway or the main road No. 1. At the Herceghalom exit leave the higyway (or the main-road) and search for the Zsámbék sign. From Zsámbék following via Szomor, Bajna take the road to Bajót. After Bajna (apr. 4 km), before reaching Bajót, beware the sing Pusztamarót on your left side. Turn left off to the dirty road and after you passed Pusztamarót, the Historical Memorial and the Ranch fogadó (hotel). At the start of the asphalt road there is a little parking place, where you can leave your car.
Rocks: from the asphalt road (parking place), follow the trail marked blue and red in the beginning and after about 100-150 meters, where the forrest road bends to left, enter in the forrest on the footpath. Turn right at the ramification just after a clearing, when you passed under the power lines. From here the trail leads you to the crags.



Budapestről autóval a megközelítéshez az M1 autópályát vagy az 1-es főutat használjuk. Herceghalom lehajtónál forduljunk Zsámbék felé. Zsámbék, Szomor, Bajna útvonalon hagyjuk el Bajnát Bajót felé, majd kb 4 km után bal felé figyeljük a Pusztamarót táblát és forduljunk le az erdei makadám útra. Pusztamarót után, elhagyva a tábort, a történelmi emlékhelyet és a Ranch Fogadót, menjünk amíg elérünk egy parkolót (itt az út újra aszfaltozott lesz). A sorompót már ne hagyjuk el.
A sziklák: A parkolóból a piros-kék turista utón induljunk el, majd kb 100 m után, ahol az út enyhén balra fordul, szemközt menjünk be az erdőbe az ösvényen. Haladjunk rajta, amíg az el nem vezet a magas-feszültségű vezeték alatt, majd ez után mindjárt az elágazásnál forduljunk jobbra. Ezt követően az ösvény a mászóudvarokba fog torkolni.

None, you can pitch a tent in the Malom-völgyi Szabadidőpark (Recreational area).
Closest toilet: In the Malom-völgyi Szabadidőpark (Recreational area) or in the Vadász Söröző (bar) in Bajna.
