My goal is to get some/a shot of this kitty...(and live to tell about it, of course)
There have been lots of tracks in the area.
Don't know if this is a big bobcat or lynx or mountain lion. Both bobcat and mountain lion have been seen in the neighborhood.

I'm afraid what you have is a cougar/mountain lion. They have prints about 4 inches. And I think your print is about that. Bobcat prints are not much more than 2 inches.

Re: Nice...Very possible. The same day I was tracking an elk and found cat prints about the same size following the elk prints for a bit.
In the same area, I found a small elk killed two winters ago.
Cougar are not uncommon in the area.

Re: Nice...Yes... but if I waited to have a partner to go hiking, I wouldn't go hiking very often.
My husband has talked about getting me a small handgun, but I'm not sure that is the way I want to travel.
I am careful though.

Re: Nice...That is what I have been thinking, sounds like a lot lighter of a pack than a handgun. Don't know that it would be as effective.
I think cats are reclusive for the most part, hoping he doesn't decide I look like dinner! :0)
My husband saw one in our driveway last spring too. I have seen prints around several times this spring.
I hope that I have the opportunity to at least see him sometime.
