Last Ridge Near Summit Of Mt. San Gorgonio
This photo was taken at around 11100ft on the last ridge adjoining the main peak area of Mt.San Gorgonio, near Palm Springs, CA. Jepson peak is off to the right. The Vivien Creek trail head starts around 5600 feet up, and the total distance round trip is around 17 miles. The San Gorgonio summit is 3505m/11501ft high. Three steep main ridge sections need to be hiked, and the top 2500 feet can be iced over in parts, requiring the use of crampons. The top slopes are very dangerous when covered in ice sheet during the winter. Several sections are wide open with 35-50 degree pitches going for several hundred meters, with only broken tree stumps and jagged rocks to stop a fall. May 2006.
