Tough little bushwhack  Sucess!

Started at the Fernwood TH and took the community trail to Layton Peak and then followed the ridge to Thurston. On the way back, took a side trip to the "Layton Nipple" which was a killer bushwhack because I was tired. I took the recommended way past the cabin to the top, but on the way down, I just went down the north side to get back to the trail. The terrain is tougher because of the cliffs, but it's only .12 miles back to the trail from the top.

Layton Nipple

I hiked up this one in the snow to get out of the smog that was laying down in the valley for so long. The nipple was a perfect spot, it was about a 100' out of the blanket of smog. It was crystal clear once on top, beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Straight east is a great view of the towers on top. I was out looking for a couple of caches in the area, which took me to the cabin below as well. The cache up here on top was named Peakup Games and has been here since 2002. The reason I started geocaching is because it brings me to all of these great aeras and I can follow geo-trails that lead me to them. This is a hike that has some wonderful views and is a moderate climb at the most. It does envolve a little bit of bushwhacking to get out to the point.

Great little peak!  Sucess!

Added some spice to it by climbing up the north face, traversing over to the saddle on the east ridge, then to the summit. Came down the west ridge. Thick brush, very thick brush. It would be a nightmare in the summer! Roundtrip milage was 2.35 miles.

The Nipple  Sucess!

This is a fun little peak. Hiked from the Community Trail. I didn't find the thick brush to be too bad but it was slippery due to fresh snow.
