"Staging area" is probably less formal and more appropriate, though not short enough or pretty. "base camp" or "trailhead" is not necessarily what this is. For example, Yosemite valley is one logistical center, but has many trailheads accessed by car. The "hut" idea is similar, but if there is no physical "hut" it would be misleading.

Josh had the logistical center idea, so I just tooks it. "base camp" is more catchy and SHORTER...
