Looking down at

the bergscrund, the Hogback, Crater Rock and even Timberline lodge (upper left) I was coming back down from the summit when I saw a couple skiers heading up my way. I was to envy that mode of rapid descent as I made my way back down. They passed me further down the mountain as I postholed much of the way. Note the steam coming out of the fumarole near Crater Rockk. 5-24-03 Click on pic for more resolution

Excuse me, Dean ...

Awesome stuff! Love that geothermal activity.
You have TO get the book, "A VISITOR'S GUIDE TO MOUNT RAINIER GLACIERS," by Carolyn Driedger. An exerpt: "Rising heat & steam EXPOSE the rocks on the northeast rim of Mt. Rainier's most recently formed CRATER. Despite stories of uncomforable quarters & CAVE GHOSTS, the SUMMIT area has now been explored. When scientists measured the snow thickness with ICE RADAR, they found it to be about 200 feet THICK near the east crater wall ..." If that's NOT interesting, I'll EAT my HAT. Wonder IF the REINDEER will care ...?

200 feet thick, wow. You won't have to eat your hat (this time anyway). Any smart reindeer avoids that sulphur smelling area.

Please pass the salt!

I've ALREADY had to eat my hat on Summitpost.
Hey, THAT's a TOUGH CROWD out there.

If you're not willing to MOVE out of your COMFORT ZONE; then THAT HAT looks very appitizing. Some say it tastes like CHICKEN! Take it from me.
