nice view!although it seems hard to take a bad photo of the Hogsback from the Pearly Gates, this one I think is pretty unique - the thick clouds make for a beautiful background. Great job.

Re: nice view!thanks Radek.
We were happy those clouds stayed below 10,000' until we could get off the upper mountain. Pretty low vis on the descent, but no too difficult to get back to the car with..... glissade tracks & ski area out of bounds markers to follow and map/compass and GPS in reserve just in case.

ConditionsAre these the normal conditions for this time of year on the Hogsback route? What does the avalanche danger usually look like in winter? Thanks!

Re: ConditionsPrior to last week's dump (5-6' of new snow), Hood was having a far below average snow fall year. There has been, however, enough snow to fill the bergschrund on the hogsback, typically the primary safety concern on this route.
Avi danger is pretty minimal on the standard route:
- Climbing below Crater Rock is usually stable and not steep enough to be avi prone.
- Hogsback link to summit is a wind formed ridge and since it is a ridge, pretty avi resistant.
- Place where snow conditions can be dicey in my experience, is a short section in the Pearly Gates & the safely issue there is usually ice condition, rather than slab, slide or slough.
Of course, I wouldn't recommend anyone climbing after a huge dump until the snow pack has a chance to settle and bond. Even though Avi danger on south side is pretty low, effort to break trail through fresh snow alone is worth waiting for time to pass after recent significant snow fall.

Nice shot of HoodThis is a familiar scene but me and two sons did this one in May 2002-one week before the disaster there. I bet doing this in heavy snow would be a lot different. We were able to walk over the snow bridge at the crevasse that I guess was covered completely for your trip. Boy, I love it up there! Dick Whiting
